An international dental graduate (or IDG or overseas qualified dentist) is any dentist in Australia with a primary dental qualification (such as BDS, BDSc, DMD or DDS) from an overseas insitution. The IDG project broadly involves understanding the experiences of these overseas qualified dentists.

Nearly one in every four dentists in Australia is overseas trained. Dentists come to Australia from over 120 different countries, and from all major continents. An understanding of the experiences of these dentists is very important for future migration policies.

This study will contribute to:

  • Practice activity comparisions
  • Mobility patterns of dentists
  • Sustainability in dental workforce
  • Ethics in migration
  • International cooperation

The project commenced in mid 2010. The planning phase was for about 6 months.

Phase 1 of the project ran for about one and a half years [Feb 2011 to July 2012].

Phase 2 of the project is currently underway with the national survey expected to be completed by Jun 2013.

The core project team is based in the Universities of Adelaide and Sydney. These members include Associate Professor David Brennan, Emeritus Professor A John Spencer, Professor Stephanie Short (Sydney), and Madhan Balasubramanian (PhD Student).

We also work with colloborators from Australian Dental Association, Australian Dental Council, Australasian Council of Dental Schools, and concerned state/territory oral health departments.

The IDG project has been designed in two phases:

Phase 1: A Qualitative Study (with two aims)

  • To understand the 'lived experiences' of overseas qualified dentists in Australia.
  • To design a survey questionnarie for the national survey

Phase 2: A National Survey (with two aims)

  • To understand the characteristics (demographic, geographic and practice activity) of overseas qualified dentists in Australia.
  • To develop an instrument to measure mobility.

The qualitative component of the IDG study was based on interviewing overseas qualified dentists. We used a 'life story' approach to understand the migratory and settling down stories of 49 overseas qualified dentists from 22 different countries, who were resident in Australia. Fieldwork was for about 6 months, and was based in five states and a territory in Australia.

The national survey for the IDG study is currently underway, and is being done in stages. We are surveying all overseas qualified dentists resident in Australia (and who are reachable). This stage is through two components:

The Australian Dental Association Inc. (ADA) component. This surveys all overseas qualified dentists, who are ADA members. This survey is in colloboration with the ADA.

  1. First Postal Mailout - last week of Jan 2013
  2. Second Postal Mailout - last week of Feb 2013
  3. Third Postal Mailout - last week of Mar 2013
  4. Online Survey - last week of Apr 2013

The Australasian Council of Dental Schools (ACODS) component. This surveys overseas qualified dentists, who are enrolled as postgraduate dental students in any dental school, or working as academics/researchers in dental schools.

  1. Handout - though a concerned colloborator in each dental school during Feb/Mar 2013
  2. Online survey - planned in May 2013

The State/Territory Oral Health Services Component. This surveys overseas qualified dentists, who are working in the public sector. The timing of this survey is being decided.
