Printing

Printing Charges are here.

Your account summary is here.

Using the Plotter

If using the plotter please think before you print.

Flatten layers.  For instance in Photoshop save a version that is "flattened" which is done by using the Layer menu and selecting "Flatten image". The difference  can result in a a four hour print job becoming 20 minutes.

Try not to print directly using a major drawing application. Try exporting instead to a pdf or a jpg instead.  They print faster and can be printed from almost anywhere.  In the case of pdf you often get a print preview. Its worth $38 just to preview it properly. Some of the major apps do not preview correcty due to layers, or windowed views being different to the print area.

The plotter will not do banners. It prints in A0 at best.

Sneaking into the margins or printing a postage stamp means you a printing a CUSTOM job and that means $38 regardles of the size.

If the plotter doesn't work then places like OfficeWorks can print your  pdf, or jpg jobs. Sometimes a lecturer will accept 4 A3's instead of an A0. You must ask first.

Tip 1 - Speed

 Your desktop is actually the U drive. Saving material to it means it is backed up and safe and will follow you from computer to computer. However it is finite in space and SLOW. Saving your project and setting scratch space to D drive is faster but you must remember to back it up at the end of the session.

This also needs the following:

If the U drive is red then delete some files.  Some undos and temp files are kept here whilst you work meaning if the drive is red you will have slow performance and unstable programs.

Facebook

The School now has a Facebook account, please click on the link to sign up.

Locked Computers

When you come across a computer that has "computer is locked"  being displayed, hold down the power button until the pc shuts down. Let go and press it to restart the pc. For those that need to leave a render going leave a sign on it - this sign will NOT be honoured during lecturers in the room.

University Software for Private computers

This link indicates options for software on your home computer.

ArchiCAD for free

Architecture and design students are entitled to receive the fully functional education version of ArchiCAD for free. Download the 30-day version right away and apply for full year extensions until the end of your studies. https://www.myarchicad.com/

Use http://students.autodesk.com/ there is an option to select “Get Software”
ALL AUTODESK SOFTWARE PUTS A LARGE “EDUCATIONAL USE” WATERMARK ACROSS PRINTOUTS.
Thats done as an antipiracy measure. The software expires at the end of each year. You must use your adelaide.edu.au university email address.

Personal  Computing  for Architecture.

It is recommended that you own a device with wifi connection such as tablet which you can bring to each class. If you are getting a personal laptop computer, it is recommended that it can support computer software such as Rhino, photoshop, illustrator, indesign.

Either a Macintosh or a PC can be used. It can be either a laptop or desktop. The desktop will be faster for the same dollar spent.  The macintosh must be capable of running windows based programs.

There are a few programs that only run under windows and which is why the Mac must be capable of running windows programs which is usually done via parallels or in the worst case bootcamp.

Autodesk products like Autocad and Revit can currently run under adapt ref: - https://www.adelaide.edu.au/technology/yourservices/learning-teaching/adapt/ so are device independent.

A significant number of students run Macs.

Ideal spec:

PC:
64-bit Windows 10, minimum of 16 gig of RAM, a I5 or  I7 {Some  I5’s are faster than I7’s – think of V6 cars versus V8 ones}
PC desktops should have a Nvidia GTX 1060 6GB or better graphics card.

Mac:
Minimum of 16 gig of RAM

There is no recommended place to buy machines.
Students can buy macs through http://www.apple.com/au_edu_5001399/shop.  {make sure “Adelaide” always shows in the title bar}
There is no preferred brand.
